Pears Raspberries Strawberries

Raspberries have always been a part of our efforts here in Western Montana. We have had over three acres devoted to raspberries as a fresh fruit and involved with a variety of trials for many years. Current efforts are directed at the production of two very hardy, time tested varieties offered to our wholesale customers. The two cultivars listed below are of Canadian origin and have been established here and produced quality fruit for 30 years.

  • Boyne
  • Honey Queen

Considered a mid-season variety from the Experiment Station, Morden, Manitoba in 1960, a cross with Chief X Indian Summer. Boyne is very winter hardy and given adequate irrigation will generate numerous thick, erect and very well armed, 6ft canes. Harvest begins in early July with large dark red, tender, juicy and aromatic fruit and lasts about 3 weeks. Trials have established Boyne as 1st in yields, very winter hardy and excellent fresh and for processing.

A unique variety developed by Mr. Robert Erskin of Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. The parentage is a cross between "Herman" and old standard red raspberry and a wild raspberry. Honey Queen produces yellow, well armed canes with an arching habit and many laterals, rarely over 4ft in height. The season begins in mid-July with beautiful amber-golden colored fruit, and lasts about 3 weeks. While Honey Queen was not a favorite with out commercial pickers due to the rasping thorns, the color and unique flavor made them a big hit with the kids and other connoisseurs of these summer gems. A treasure from the collection of Clayton Berg, Helena, MT. Honey Queen is very winter hardy, definitely of gourmet quality and highly recommended anywhere in Montana. A new block is in production at this time, not currently available to our wholesale customers.

While we do not offer strawberry plants for sale, past and on-going trials have rendered the information below. Location and soil variation influence berry production and performance. June bearing cultivars like the old standard "Senator Dunlap" have proven winter hardy and rated tops in yields with large, sweet quality fruit. Ever-Bearing varieties are also popular in Montana backyard gardens, the variety "Fern" is well established here, and is a favorite in the Bitterroot. New trials include Hood, Benton and Teton....the jury is still out...
